Framework: groups and organisations as \(\mathcal{R}\)-management nodes

A household, team, firm, or movement is not a metaphor for an information-persisting system — it is one. Sociology, in persistence terms, is the study of how level-\(L+1\) and \(L+2\) nodes allocate energy, maintain shared models, and export friction while keeping \(\mathcal{R} \ge 1\) as a distinct collective pattern.

The equation (reminder)

\[ \mathcal{R}^{(L)} = \Psi\!\bigl(\mathcal{R}^{(L+1)}\bigr) \cdot \left[\frac{P_{in}^{(L)}\,\eta(I)}{\omega^{(L)}\,\mathcal{E}_{\Sigma}^{(L)}\,\bigl(1 + \mathcal{D}_{KL}^{(L)} + \Gamma^{(L)}\bigr)}\right] \cdot \Phi\!\bigl(\mathcal{R}^{(L-1)}\bigr). \]

At the social layer, members are \(\Phi\) (people, skills, trust stock), the collective is the node, and markets, states, and ecosystems are \(\Psi\).

Mapping the terms

FPE term Sociology reading Examples
\(P_{in}\) Budget, revenue, labour hours, attention pool Payroll, volunteer time, family income
\(\eta(I)\) Coordination efficiency Specialisation, clear mandates, good tooling
\(\omega\) Bureaucratic / ritual complexity Org chart depth, meeting load, compliance theatre
\(\mathcal{E}_\Sigma\) Environmental volatility Market shocks, policy change, demographic shift
\(\mathcal{D}_{KL}\) Gap between official story and floor reality KPI theatre, “we’re fine” family broadcast, founder mythology
\(\Gamma\) Unresolved conflict backlog Grievances, silos, frozen roles, unpaid debts (emotional or fiscal)
\(\Phi\) Member substrate Health, skills, trust, tacit know-how in people
\(\Psi\) Enclosing shelter Employer of record, nation-state, supply chain, alliance
\(\mathcal{R} \ge 1\) The group still exists as a recognisable node Household cohabiting with function; firm still trading; movement still mobilising

Two scales, one math

Level Typical nodes You are…
\(L+1\) Couple, household, friend group, team, parish Member and sometimes sub-node for others
\(L+2\) Firm, school, city movement, union, church denomination Employee, citizen, parishioner — \(\Phi\) of the org

Psychology essays treat you at \(L\). Geopolitics treats states at \(L+3\). This folder is the middle: where most daily life actually runs.

The two operations (again)

Almost every effective social repair — family meeting, post-mortem, union negotiation, truth commission — reduces to:

  1. Lower \(\mathcal{D}_{KL}\) — align the collective model with observables.
  2. Lower \(\Gamma\) — resolve, renegotiate, or exit unresolved friction.

Rituals, bylaws, and “culture” are implementations. The ratio is indifferent to vocabulary.

Fractal roles at the social layer

Every member simultaneously:

Pathology often comes from role collapse: treating the firm as your self (identity fusion), treating your child as your node (enmeshment), or treating the nation as your family (see geopolitics/framework.md).

Diagnostic questions

For any group that feels “stuck”:

  1. \(\Phi\): Are members intact (sleep, skills, trust, turnover)?
  2. \(P_{in}\eta\): Is energy available and spent on coordination, not theatre?
  3. \(\mathcal{D}_{KL}\): Where does the official story diverge from what members witness?
  4. \(\Gamma\): What is unresolved and how large is set \(C\)?
  5. \(\omega\): Which process complexity can die without killing the node?
  6. \(\Psi\): Is external shelter real or performative?
  7. Export: Is the group lowering local \(\Gamma\) by draining a sub-node’s \(\Phi\)?
